Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is most commonly performed due to damage to the tooth, either by decay or by an accident that has caused it to break. Other reasons include:

  • Some people have extra teeth that simply need to be removed to allow other teeth to grow in
  • Teeth can occasionally become infected, sometimes from cancer drugs
  • A person getting braces may need a tooth removed to allow other teeth to move into place
  • Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are often removed if they are painful or decayed

Tooth Extraction Procedure

An X-ray will usually be taken before the procedure to determine the best way to remove the tooth. Anesthesia is used before the procedure, either local anesthesia to dull the pain or general anesthesia to cause the person to essentially sleep through the procedure.

If the tooth is above the gum line, the surgeon will generally be able to simply lift it out. In some cases, the tooth will be below the gum, and the surgeon will need to cut the gum to be able to access the tooth.

Due to the anesthesia, it is generally advised to avoid eating or drinking six to eight hours before the procedure, and to have someone available to drive the person home after it is over.
