Guided Tissue Regeneration

Guided Tissue Regeneration involves regrowing diseased gum tissue and/or bone structures around teeth. Due to insufficient brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can build up on teeth, damaging the surrounding gum tissue. Over time this process can cause the gum tissue to recede away from the teeth, leaving gaps for more bacteria, plaque and tartar to continue wearing down the teeth and gums.

Eventual consequences include:

  • Bacterial infections of the gums and teeth
  • Gum tissue shrinking away from teeth, leaving gaps between the gum and teeth
  • Damage to the teeth, sometimes causing a tooth to be lost

Guided Tissue Regeneration Procedure

First, a local anesthetic is applied to the affected area to numb any pain and the area is thoroughly cleaned. Next, donor tissue will be removed from somewhere else in the mouth—most likely the roof of the mouth—and stitched into place over the affected area.

In some cases, bone will also need to be regrown around the tooth. In these cases, a special material is placed against the tooth to allow the bone to regrow around the tooth. Generally, this material will be absorbed by the body within eight weeks following the procedure.
